Operation Olive Tree written by Jemil Metti is a fiction book about an unconventional friendship throughout the conflict of the Israeli and Palestinian people. The 2 main characters are Irith who is Israeli and Jamal who is Palestinian. They both attend the school Neve Shalom. Their families sent them because it was the best school in the area with the best learning programs although somewhat dangerous as both sides want it destroyed due to the fact that they believe Israeli and Palestinian children should not be in the same school. Irith and Jamal's love of music, specifically Opera is what inspired this unlikely friendship and alliance for peace. Does the friendship hold with time? Can peace be achieved between the Palestinian and Israeli people? You will have to read the book to find out.

I love the way you are transported to Israel and the conflict by the descriptive writing of the author. You root for peace of the Israeli and Palestinian people and fall in love with the friendship growing between Irith and Jamal. I felt the turmoil of the families who wanted their children to thrive and be happy but were afraid of the government and their friends labeling them as conspirators or traitors to their country. Best friends Jamal and Salah grow apart as Salah remains with his prejudice views of the Israeli people while Irith and her father Professor Goldman are constantly fighting because he believes that the Palestinians only want to destroy them and take their land. Jamal and Irith's teachers Albert Goldstein and Karen Roth get them both involved in a school in Tel Aviv to perform Opera to help show that the Palestinians and the Israelis can work together. There were many twists and turns so I couldn't predict what was coming next. You can't help feeling hope for peaceful solution.

There wasn't anything I didn't like about this book. I enjoyed reading so much that I finished it in 3 days although if I had the time I would've finished in one sitting. I look forward to more books by Jemil Metti.

I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was written wonderfully with no errors so it appears to be professionally edited. Did I mention that I loved this book?

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in History and different cultures. If you like rooting for an unconventional friendship and breaking stereotypes you will also love this book. There are some sad and suspenseful parts but if you're looking for a pick me up or some faith in humanity this is for you.
