[Following is a volunteer review of "A Dream For Peace" by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah.]
A Dream For Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is an engaging, thought-provoking, and educational read that follows the historical life of the author. Ghoulem Berrah came from a humble background; his mother had to raise him after his father’s death. She took great care to ensure that he had a solid education and continued to show academic success throughout his life. Despite encounters with bigotry and discrimination, he maintained focus on his academic goals. Sometimes, he would be jailed for speaking out against this prejudice. The author's subsequent efforts would improve the prospects for Algeria and other African nations. As the president of Cote d'Ivoire's ambassador, he was able to further his mission of uplifting and bettering people's lives all over the world, but notably in Africa. The protagonists in this narrative exhibit bravery, faith, and perseverance. The author's life serves as an inspiration for us to follow.
I was apprehensive that I wouldn't make my review deadline if I chose this book because of how long it is. As I read through the first hundred pages, I became more interested in learning about the story's unfolding events. The experience of reading this autobiography has helped me grow immensely. Dr. Berrah is such an outstanding individual that it is difficult not to admire him. This amazing guy taught me a lot about the value of service to others. The lessons I learned from his experience inspired me to improve myself. I kept reminding myself that if the person in this tale can do it, so can I. Notably, individuals like Dr. Berrah would make the world a much better place, and reading this story has inspired me to try to be that change. This was a genuinely fantastic book.
Although most of the book is written in English, a few discussions are written in French. That was the one aspect of the book that I found a bit challenging. Otherwise, everything else was wonderful. The author's participation in several historically significant events lends credence to the claims made in this book, and the inclusion of photographs lends more credence to those claims. I found the author's message pushing for peace in Africa and racism in the US extremely compelling.
I give A Dream For Peace four out of four stars. The author spent his time with an outstanding effort, which is evident on every page. Considering the length of the book, the editing was professional and remarkable. There was no objectionable language or content. In addition, this is not the first autobiography of a political person I've read, but it is the most engaging.
I highly recommend this book to anybody interested in African diplomatic history. Berrah's contributions to the continent of Africa provide a wealth of lessons. Students of history will also benefit much from reading this fantastic book.
