[Following is a volunteer review of "Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure" by Catherine A. Pepe.]
Mary Grace and Donny love to go to the park and hang out there. They have so many friends, and life appears to be good until their parents call them to a meeting. It surprises Mary Grace because her friend's parents recently divorced, and she believes the same may happen to her parents. They notify Mary Grace and Donny that they will move to Africa for two years. Mary grace is unhappy, angry, and hurt and does not understand why her parents would do this to them. They've been told that they must spend the next two years in California with their grandparents. Donny is thrilled, but Mary Grace interprets this as her parents abandoning them. Will Mary Grace be able to stop her parents' relocation to Africa, or will she have to adjust to her new situation and learn to love California?
One thing I liked about the book was how educational it was. The narrative promotes kindness and respect for one another. When Donny gets lost in the park, everyone around helps track him down, and some boys even volunteer to search for Donny. The book also teaches how to treat people with special needs with kindness and not to bully or discriminate against them. Donny has Down syndrome, so Mary Grace must keep an eye on him and ensure that her rage about having to relocate doesn't rub off on him. The story also teaches youngsters to be resilient in the face of adversity and that their parents always have their best interests at heart.
I don't have any complaints regarding the book.
I rate Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure by Catherine A. Pepe 4 out of 4 stars. The book is entertaining and educational, as the children's adventures teach virtues such as kindness, patience, goodness, and gentleness. There were no grammatical errors in the book. I believe it is exceptionally well-edited.
This book is appropriate for older children. There are numerous adventures for Mary Grace, Donny, and their grandparents as they investigate mysteries.
