[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
"See the good in everything, and the best of it will find you.” This was the advice given to Galen Bray by his grandmother. He had forgotten it, but as he gets onto the boat leaving for Voulhire to freedom, he decides never to forget that again. Galen is on his way to Magnum Caelum in Voulhire after living his whole life in the war-torn Lands of the Princes. We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is an introduction to the world of Voulhire. It introduces us to some of its people and cities through the eyes of the young Galen, filled with wonder and awe at this new world he will reside in.
Voulhire is not without its problems, and the King is trying to keep control and protect his people but struggling for support, including his Knights, at the very start of this dark time when Galen Bray arrives. The darkness lures in the form of probably the most powerful Wizard alive being kept prisoner on an island, biding his time to take revenge, and the Riva Rohavi, who will maim and kill everybody and anybody that crosses their path. Dancing in step, they are at war with this land they hate with every fiber of their being.
Matthew Tysz did not just write a book. He created a whole new world, multiverse, and cosmos you can get lost in, and even though this was only the first book, the story captivated me and kept me interested. I am anxious to start the next book and look forward to the journey Voulhire will provide us. Also, the additional reading explains some more of the background of this world and some other worlds involved. The map and the glossary of terms and names made the reading experience even more special.
All that said, and the fact that the book was exceptionally edited, I rate it “4 out of 4” stars. This is a book anyone from young adults to the older generation will enjoy. There is some crude language, but not overwhelmingly so, and if you like fantasy and magic, you will not go wrong getting lost in the world of Voulhire and the multiverse in which it has been created.
