[Following is a volunteer review of "Reconfigurement" by E. Alan Fleischauer.]
Planning for retirement is unavoidable. It is impossible for a human to work forever; allowances must be made for ill-health, weakness and old age. A person’s life while retired is just as important as the years spent working- in some cases they can be more important. Reconfigurement by E. Alan Fleischauer is a practical guide which offers counsel on how to take advantage of retirement, and how to plan ahead for the numerous changes which are bound to come with retirement. Reconfigurement has at its core, the value of planning ahead. No course can be undertaken without a foolproof plan, and retirement must be handled with the same gravitas. This book addresses issues ranging from the importance of a retirement plan, to the necessity of annuities and long-term care, as well as investing, drafting a will, Social Security, and Medicare, all of which are indispensable for a smooth retirement. This is a book for all time. It answers frequently asked questions such as what does one do to avoid outliving one’s resources? How to deal with Social Security and Medicare? And what are the best investment opportunities? All of which will still be relevant years into the future.
There are quite a few reasons I enjoyed reading this book. To begin with, the author puts a lot of effort into simplifying the language of the book, even when discussing complex topics. The book is written in a clear follow-along tone that encourages readers to get lost in these pages; even about a topic as mundane as retirement. Descriptions are kept brief to not only arouse but also maintain the interest of readers. The few charts and tables included in the book were all easy to grasp and understand. The author utilizes jokes to break the monotony which can occur from discussing topics readers would rather avoid. The author is honest about the information and recommendations in his book. He advises that it is still necessary to meet with professional financial advisors for assistance as different financial problems will require unique solutions.
While I liked almost everything about this book- from the language to the diction and even the author’s writing style, I found that the jokes became a little too much after a while.
I will be rating this book four out of four stars because though I had a difficult time with the jokes, they did not detract from the general essence of the book.
I recommend this book for young adults planning ahead and adult readers. It is particularly suitable for adult readers who are close to the retirement age and are seeking books to aid them in making informed decisions concerning the rest of their lives.
