Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream For Peace is an insightful memoir of 644 pages written by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah, a revolutionary leader and a passionate Algerian advocate. He shares intimate details about his life, starting from his early childhood. He describes his upbringing, family life, and religion and how they all shaped him into his present self. His life as a political diplomat is characterized by an undying hunger for peace, equality, and freedom. The memoir explores the author’s journey as an exemplary ambassador and a brilliant advisor to President Houphouët-Boigny.
He also becomes the first scientist to create a hypothesis on the Reverse Transcriptase Enzyme. Despite his numerous accomplishments, Dr. Berrah was a passionate advocate for rights and tolerance for all religions. The book criticizes decisions and experiences that impact the author’s life. As a passionate advocate for the tolerance of all religions, he proves his stance by including all the life lessons he obtained from observing people. Was Dr . Ghoulem able to fulfill his life-long dream to succeed as a mediator and ambassador? Read this book to find out.
There are many things to like about this book. I encountered only a few errors in this book, which shows that it was professionally edited. I admire the fact that the author was very open and honest about the struggles and challenges that came with his career as a diplomat. He even gives his personal opinion on the influential leaders that he was chanced to meet. It was refreshing to see someone invest so much into helping others at no cost.
The book also gives a glimpse into the political dynamics of third-world African countries and various diplomatic relations. Through his excellent depiction, Dr. Ghoulem Berrah provides a rare glimpse into the Algerian-African culture and their long-lasting traditions, like how marriages are conducted and many more. He even describes various locations in Algeria and France while mentioning what they are famous for. The images and notes included helped me to understand the author’s perspective better. They also inspire a reader's creative imagination. Detailed descriptions show research and experience were utilized, and they helped to paint a thorough picture of his life, including both the good and the bad parts.
I did not find any negative aspects, although the length of the book felt excessive, and this is understandable due to the level of information the book contains, so it was not extraneous. But it also means that the book cannot be read in a single sitting, which may be discouraging for some readers. There are also mentions of murder and violence, which may be triggering to some individuals.
As a result of these reasons, I rate this book four out of four stars. I recommend this book to lovers of memoirs and historical non-fiction. Also, I recommend it to people interested in learning more about conflict resolution and political relationships.
