[Following is a volunteer review of "Terms of Service" by Craig W. Stanfill.]
The Artificial Intelligence Company is where Kim works. She is a conscientious woman who knows the law and always follows it. Her childhood experiences left her melancholy, and she sought solace in binge drinking. When Shan, her best friend, returned to her life, everything was about to change. After a risky bicycle adventure, Kim had a better understanding of her surroundings. She caught a glimpse of the closely guarded secrets of the powerful. She realizes it's time to take charge of her life after receiving a new project from the company where she works, but doing so will cost her dearly. Will she be successful? Learn more by reading this book.
A dystopian society is depicted in Craig W. Stanfill's novel Terms of Service. The story illustrates how these characters' lives are governed by those in positions of authority from infancy. They utilize AIs to monitor every aspect of their lives, including what they eat, who they date, and whether their words and deeds conform to the norms that govern them. People are led to believe they have freedom when, in fact, they do not by those in positions of authority who propagate deception. The author transports us to a society where AIs have mostly replaced humans and they are no longer a major force in society. The Food Company predicts what breakfast the smart refrigerator will provide. The Matchmaker Company forces you to choose who to go on a date with while The Clothing Company decides what to wear. Humans must obediently comply with the AIs or else a proper penalty will be meted out.
This is an intriguing narrative that kept me reading yet gave me the creeps. This is because it opened my eyes to the possibility that, given how quickly technology is developing, this dystopian world may one day be a reality for us. But instead of bringing happiness, it will instead promote loneliness and melancholy because the AIs will perform jobs that should be done by people to make us feel alive and fulfilled. The book goes into more detail about how parents who choose to raise their kids instead of turning them over to a corporation when they are four are punished. These folks don't understand love because they are destined to live alone for the rest of their lives. Stanfill portrays how the AIs are abused and utilized for nefarious purposes, which causes suffering among the populace instead of providing consolation.
The bond between Kim and Kimberly is what I adored most about the novel. The AI was designed with human characteristics. I was moved by Kimberly's efforts to protect Kim from the horrors that are pursuing her and to help her comprehend her surroundings. My understanding of how the AIs function was enhanced by the author's imaginative prose.
There is nothing I disliked about the book. The novel is masterfully written and provocative. The book is exceptionally well edited. I found no errors in it. I rate this book four out of four stars. From this superbly written story with compelling themes, readers will gain insight into what the future may hold for us in reality. And it is now up to us to choose how we want it to turn out. I recommend this book to fans of science fiction and readers that love books about AI.
