Review of Hattie Vavaseur

[Following is a volunteer review of "Hattie Vavaseur" by M. Rebecca Wildsmith.]
Hattie Vavaseur by M. Rebecca Wildsmith is set in a time that is reminiscent of a story by Jane Austin or Mary Shelley. We are introduced to Miss Hattie Vavaseur, a well-to-do spinster who is suffering from a bout of amnesia. In an attempt to not have anyone pass judgment on her for her current forgetful condition, she sets out to discover who this cast of odd characters is around her, to discover her purpose for being in such a strange and unusual setting, and to attempt to help solve the murder of a businessman with the help of a soothsayer and several ghosts along the way.
There were so many positive aspects to this book, but the thing that keeps standing out to me and puts me in absolute awe is how seamlessly the author was able to convey the language of the time. She honestly makes it feel like you are set in the late 1800s, which just draws you into the storyline and makes you feel like you are actually there. Between that and the eclectic cast of characters, both living and dead, this is definitely a book I can see myself reading over and over again!
I honestly have no negative aspects about this book. The plot is one that draws you in and keeps you guessing which way she is going to take the story. I was personally wrong with the way I thought this was going to end up many times over. If I had to squint to come up with something I didn't like, it would be the one character, Vamelda Anstruthers. There was nothing in particular that I didn't like, she just came across as being over the top at times, which in these instances didn't really add much to the tale.
This story is a quick but slightly complex read. The author uses lovely vocabulary that is perfect for the setting of this book. It truly does take you back in time to before the turn of the 20th century. With the language being as advanced as it is, I would have to say this book is best suited for an older age group, such as people in their early twenties. The themes involved in it are not overly advanced though, so I would also see certain teens enjoying this read as well.
With all of this said, I can easily give this book a 4 out of 4. I found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable read. The suspense that she is able to create keeps you wanting more. As well as that, it was wonderfully edited with no mistakes that could be found on my behalf. Anyone who is looking for an old-fashioned fashion story with a twist of ghosts and suspense will absolutely adore Hattie Vavaseur!
