“I swear not to draw out my life. When disgust and boredom are all that’s left, I’ll end this.” Those were the words Neil had always said to himself. The past couple of years had felt like a drag, like he had had the life sucked out of him. He was doing well enough career-wise, managing a local bakery. And he had a wife of a few years named Fay. They met one rainy day, almost by accident, and he quickly became her saviour. He saved her from a toxic relationship and a financial life just as bad, and they had built a life together. But he was missing something, something he couldn't quite figure out, and it would take more than a guardian angel to save him from those suicidal thoughts he had every single night. Looking Glass Friends by E L Neve follows Neil's tortured life as he threatens to end it violently.

Romance is beautiful, and nothing captures its beauty quite like poetry. And poetry is what E L Neve knows best. From generations past, words have been a preferred choice of professing love, and wherever I turned, I felt like I was tickled by the sheer exquisite nature of the words that were used to tell this intricate tale. When most authors focus on the nature of relationships, this author chose to also confront the bigger picture of love, how it moulds and changes us.

The story relies almost completely on these beautiful words, the characters, and these profound ideas about the human experience of love. I loved witnessing the journey Neil took from that moment he was on the bed, in the dark, contemplating the end of life, to how a spark was lit that filled him with a new life. It speaks of the power of human connections and how intensely those connections can affect our whole lives.

About halfway into the story, I started wishing it could move on. I felt like the author spent too much time teasing us with what we already knew would eventually happen. There was no need to drag the storyline, especially because the storyline didn't find new paths to cross and just stayed constant.

This is a 4 out of 4 stars novel. The writing is too crisp and beautiful, and it deserves to be highly rewarded. The editing is also exceptional in every way. Not many authors can pull off what E L Neve was able to pull off here. I just hope the author also puts in as much effort into the storyline because then they would have an even better novel in their hands.

Something about the mature nature of the writing suggests that this could be a perfect book for women in their twenties and older. I'm recommending it to women exclusively using the assumption that women, traditionally, prefer romance novels more than men, but perhaps the poetic nature of the book is enough to be appreciated by some men, too.
