Mary Grace and Donny are two siblings who live with their parents in Wichita, Kansas. One day, their parents receive a special assignment from the bishop, saying that they have to go to Africa as missionaries for the Episcopal Church. They send Mary Grace and Donny to California, where they have to stay with their grandparents for two years. Will Mary Grace and Donny be able to adjust to California in the absence of their parents?

Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe is a heartwarming children's story about family and friendship. What I like the most about this book is the depiction of family dynamics. The children's sentiments towards being left in the care of their relatives are very realistic. The author emphasizes the value of independence that the children learn and the trust they slowly develop with the new people around them. The story will teach young children how to build camaraderie with kids their age and how to trust the adults in their lives with their problems.

Apart from the relevant lessons for young readers, the story also carries some valuable knowledge for adults who are dealing with children. The story also explores the issue of bullying among schoolchildren. I really like the part in the story where the author teaches the essence of punishment. It's enlightening to know that punishment doesn't always have to be harsh for a child, no matter how naughty he or she might be.

The author paces the story so well, with some adequate exposition and a proper buildup towards the climax of the story. Everything ties together in the end with a satisfying resolution. I don't have anything to dislike about the book because the technical aspects are flawless and the story conveys many important life lessons.

I also did not see any errors, so the editing must be excellent. The premise is pretty simple, but the book is full of many valuable messages. Therefore, I am giving the book a solid 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this to middle-grade readers who like short novels with simple plotlines and endearing characters.

You said it beautifully! I feel the same way, and I wish that this point would come across more children's books. Thank you for your review!
