Hattie Vavaseur, by M. Rebecca Wildsmith, was an interesting and exhilarating read. Normally, I avoid books with supernatural elements but, something told me to try this novel and I am glad I did. I was hooked from the moment I started reading. This novel tells the story of Hattie Vavaseur, an orphan who grew up with her aunt and uncle. She grew into a rich, headstrong lady of England’s high society. As she strives to solve a mystery from her past that holds the key to her future, an acquaintance enlists her help in unraveling the mystery of a murder. Will she be able to solve both mysteries, or will her past come to haunt her before she gets the chance to?

I really enjoyed reading this novel, reveling in the suspense. I enjoyed the thrill of turning each page, wondering what the author has in store, and wondering if the mystery will finally be solved and revealed. I liked how descriptive it was. For instance, when describing the scene and emotions of the characters, the author was so descriptive that it felt as if I was there in person, seeing and feeling it for myself. Another aspect of the novel that I found delightful was that I was not kept in suspense to the point where I was bored and ready to stop reading. Even though the author took a while to reveal everything, clues were given here and there to keep you intrigued.

I can’t think of anything that I disliked about this novel or anything that negatively affected my reading experience. It was a very pleasant reading experience.

I rate Hattie Vavaseur 4 out of 4 stars. It was creatively written, intriguing, engaging, and an enjoyable read. The plot was interesting and well thought out, the characters were relatable and it seems that a lot of research was done to write this novel. In addition, this novel seems to have been professionally edited, as I found no errors in my reading.

I think this novel would appeal to adults who enjoy suspense novels with supernatural elements. Its lack of expletives and sexual content would also make it suitable for young readers, but with a warning, since the violent content increases towards the end. I would not recommend this novel to readers who may find different beliefs about the afterlife offensive since it forms a big part of the plot for Hattie Vavaseur.
