[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is the first instalment in what is sure to be a delightfully crafted series of high fantasy that introduces the reader to the magical worldbuilding works of Matthew Tysz. Our story gives us the point of views and incites of key players in this new world that we experience at a fast paced narrative of the inner dealing of our world. We get to understand the multiple worlds within our story as well as the political, social, religious and magical construct our characters find themselves living. Family, friendships, political strife, war and revenge are manipulated into this fascinating tale that captivates the reader from the very beginning.
This work of fiction is beautifully written in a manner that is easy to follow yet intriguing to the mind. I personally enjoyed the multiple point of views leading me to grasp a better understanding of each character, the joys, sadness's, strength's and weakness as well as their personal relations with other characters in this story. It was also supported by surprising bouts of wit and humor that had me randomly busting into giggles. This I found brought about it being a lighter read given the more serious overall tone of the story line and the harder topics to digest that were delicately addressed in an immensely pleasing form.
Unfortunately this work of near perfection was marred in few instances where our author saw it fit to insert certain features that are a part of our modern reality today, not to say that they couldn't be apart of Voulhire but I personally found it to be rather lazy on the part of our author given the fact that world he created is set in high fantasy. Otherwise the introduction to this world was rather brilliant.
This captivating peace of fiction deserves no less that 4 out of 4 stars in part the beautifully written narration in its old English that was not a hindrance to understand, this tales of kings and lords, wars and strife was exquisitely done by our wonderful author.
Id recommend this work to all readers that have a loving appreciation for young adult fantasy faction in line of that with the great works of Sara J. Maas. Matthew tysz has woven for his audience an impeccable beginning to a series that I'm sure will make waves in prominent book circles.
