[Following is a volunteer review of "Reconfigurement" by E. Alan Fleischauer.]
Reconfigurement by E. Alan Fleischauer serves as a complete and comprehensive guide which offers counsel on how to plan for retirement and the numerous changes that are bound to come with it. The author uses his experience from years in the finance industry to discuss some essential requirements for making the best use of an income for people nearing retirement. This 80-page book is tailored to an American audience and discusses various American products like Life Protection/Life Insurance, Social Security, and traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs. The topics covered in this book were income, best career assessments to take, retirement planning, life protection, social security, investing, retirement plans, health insurance, long-term care, estates, and so much more. This book also has some assessment tests readers can take, to learn more about themselves, career choices, and retirement plans.
I liked that the author takes a light hearted approach to educating readers on financial and career planning. The tone of the book is conversational, which prevents the book from being boring. Instead, Fleischauer shares stories and jokes that make the content more readable and entertaining. For example, I really enjoyed the story about Frank and Ann. Also, financial concepts & models are described in an easily understandable way and he kept the topics brief and concise. I also appreciated that the book contains practical tips for finding reliable financial advisors and life insurance agents. He also gave both hypothetical and real-life examples to illustrate harder and more complicated concepts.
However, I disliked that he frequently deviated from his main topics, and that caused him to detract from the idea he’s trying to explain. Also, the information was very specific to American citizens making it less relatable to me.
All in all, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it's a quick, entertaining & useful read for anyone thinking about planning for the future. It's a book that provides actionable advice that anyone can read and use to improve their finances. It was also exceptionally well edited.
Although the target audience is people nearing retirement age, I recommend this book to readers who don't know much about retirement planning but are interested in retiring comfortably. I also recommend it to people who feel stuck in a particular job or career path because they feel that's the only path to a good retirement. The author encourages all to find a more enjoyable way to work and save.
