[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz tells the story of the people of Voulhire. Galen Bray is just a nobody from the war-torn Lands of the Princes when he receives word from an estranged uncle that wants him to inherit his forge and become the new town blacksmith in Magnum Caelum, a port in Voulhire. Embark alongside Galen as he learns about this enchanting land with a history rich with war, treachery, and magic. Not only does he learn about the origin of the land, but also the universe and all the marvels that it holds. The book also follows the life of King Wilhelm of Voulhire, a generous and peaceful king who cares for his people and is greatly loved by the Voulhirians, but is burdened with the weight of his crown. Lord Eldus, the newly appointed lord of Hillport, has to find a way to rebuild this broken seaside town and its hard-working people, trying to be better than the history of dreadful lords that ruled before him.
The very first chapter throws you headfirst into this world in the most anticipating way ever. Every chapter is written from someone else's perspective, sometimes even the antagonists, which I enjoyed very much. As the story unfolds you systematically learn more about this intricate land, slowly building your knowledge about the detailed world and its admirable people. I was fond of the way that magic was a well-known and celebrated force practiced by many people across the world. The characters are well-described and have the most intriguing names. Galen, so innocent in this brutal world, was one of my favorites along with Rowan, his uncle’s executor, who has taken upon himself the role of teaching Galen the ways of Voulhire.
There just isn’t anything that I truly disliked about the book. One thing that I would want to have changed is the length of the story. As captivating as a good cliffhanger is, I think that the book could have been a bit longer. There are some violent scenes throughout the book, but I would not want to change them as they fit nicely into the world.
If this book is just an introduction to an even greater series, I cannot wait to read about the rest of Voulhire. It is a well-written and mesmerizing story about this remarkably dangerous world and what surprises it holds. This is why I am rating We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies a well-deserved 4 out of 4 stars.
It was exceedingly well edited as I could not find any errors while I was reading. This book is a definite must-read for anyone who is a fan of fiction about war, magic, and a dangerously dreadful villain.
