[Following is a volunteer review of "The Crystilleries of Echoland" by Dew Pellucid.]
In Will Cleary's world, children disappear without a trace. No one sees it happen, and none return, except for Will, the boy that came back after a week with the help of a falcon and a wolf, but without his twin sister, who had disappeared with him. The animals that saved him reveal that there is another world, a world filled with see-through people or Echos that are reflections of the people or Sounds in Will's world. A place where Will may have been during the week he was missing and where all the missing children might be as well. But now Echos from Echoland want to kill him. So he decides to go into their world and face its dangers. At a fortress in Echoland, the Sounds taken from his world and their Echos are held captive. To save the Sounds and Echoland, Will must help his Echo, the prince of Echoland, to get his throne by solving a 200-year-old riddle.
The Crystilleries of Echoland by Dew Pellucid is a fantastic book. With the story's imaginative settings and well-developed characters, it is easy to fall in love and get hooked on this story. The narrator makes it easy to follow along with the story as he narrates. He brought the story to life using different tones as he embodied a range of emotions. He also transitions between the style and pitch of his voice effortlessly to portray various characters.
A negative aspect of this book is that we meet the sister very quickly and without much explanation. I thought the author could have explained her appearance a little clearer, making the reunion between the siblings a bit longer and more impactful. In the end, it doesn't detract from the story the way the reunion plays out.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. When I listen to an audiobook, I look for the narration to capture my attention completely. I don't want to miss the past two chapters because the narration doesn't hook me as well as it could. This book's audio accomplishes that, helping me get sucked into the story and not miss half of it because I found something more captivating than what the narrator was bringing to life. I was able to find no errors in the audio of this book.
I would recommend this book to young adults. Even though the book got dark at times, it still has the same feel and layout as many other fantastical young adult books like Harry Potter with alternate reality/worlds. It's an imaginative book with a very realistic world, helping you dream up what our world could be like if the reality this story created existed.
