Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first book of the series which consists of 7 books. Voulhire is a kingdom in a golden age. The book tells a story of a refugee Galen Bray who inherits property in this country. Galen is a son of a ruler of the Land of Princes. At first glance, Voulhire looks like a perfect place to move to. It is prosperous in nearly every aspect. Or so it seems. Under that perfect surface hide some serious troubles.
What makes this novel stand out among numerous books is the form of narration. There are many perspectives. They change from one place to another as well as from character to character. I think this adds different points of view and therefore the readers have a clearer picture of the events and history. Due to that, the experience is much more objective, the readers know different perspectives and can decide for themselves what character they like the most or who is the protagonist or the antagonist rather than having these information handed to them by only giving the book one perspective.
Another thing I liked is how realistic the characters were. It was clear what drove them to act they way they did. Their emotions, as well as thoughts, were described in a very transparent way. Especially the main character was presented in a realistic way. While reading the book it feels as though the reader is in his head. This resulted in the characters being not only understandable but incredibly relatable.
What surprised me in this novel was the amount of mystery. I did not expect a fantasy novel to be so filled with questions and puzzles. There was mystery after mystery and inquiry after inquiry. The book contained various unexplained directions, appearances, or disappearances. At many points, the reader was left wondering whether the new character is a friend or an enemy, or maybe both. In my opinion, this resulted in the book being so captivating. With all that secrecy and conundrum it was almost impossible to be avulsed from the book.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is professionally edited, I did not spot any spelling mistakes. I would recommend this book to young adults and adults. There are quite a few instances of cursing and descriptions of violence which may be inappropriate for younger readers. However, all in all, the book was a fantastic read. It was very descriptive and imaginative as well as pleasurable.
