Review of E M P Honeymoon
Dorothy May Mercer's E M P Honeymoon: Kelly and Tom is the second book that I have had the pleasure of reading which is written by Mercer, and I think it is safe to say that I am hooked. I have already picked up my next book from the McBride series. This might put across how much I loved this book.
The book begins with a bang and the readers are hooked from the first scene. The book begins when Senator McBride receives a suspicious call from his younger sister, who sounded panicked and out of breath. The newlywed couple, Kelly and Tom, wanted to have a relaxing and fun honeymoon but ended up stumbling across a terrorist threat in the making which was targeting North America. The couple immediately abandons their honeymoon and joins the team to fight against the terrorists.
Let us begin with the positives. I was highly impressed by Mercer’s astounding knowledge of concepts like EMP, or the workings of law enforcement agencies and national security. It shows how the people who work to defend their country are never really off-duty. But it also shows how these agencies don’t work together even when the end goals and objectives are the same. For example, when the police force did not cooperate with the federal agency.
The book provides us with multiple strong characters, and we get to see them in action. It becomes even better when all of them team up to protect their country. It was a treat! The book is narrated in the third person narrative, and even when two different yet parallel narratives are being given alternatively, it is done expertly without confusing or overwhelming the reader.
I could not find any noteworthy negatives. The book has no grammatical errors. It seems to be professionally edited. However, even though the title may suggest a bit of romance, the couple forgets about their honeymoon as soon as they learned about the potential threat to their country. It was fascinating to see how different people from different backgrounds came together to fight a potential terrorist attack. Personally, I would have liked to see a bit more of Tom and Kelly's relationship. The title does say "Honeymoon," but we do not see much of them as a married couple. Even when the plot is introduced, the two are not together. But regardless, the book was nearly perfect.
I would give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars because it had my attention from start to finish. There are no negatives that warrant the deduction of a star. The book is action-packed, unpredictable, and reasonably fast-paced. The moves forward without making it feel rushed or leaving things unresolved. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a light crime fiction or thriller.
