We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies tells a captivating story of society in a world of mages and manipulators of physics with human motives, qualities and shortcomings coexisting with humans and other beings alike. The story begins with a shameful overthrowing of a lord of a small town in Voulhire due to his unpalatable abuse of power, by a lord debatably far more ruthless. The people are freed of their want for good leadership, when Lord Eldus and his family take over the reins and commit to building up the town to prosperity not seen in a long time. Galen arrives in Voulhire with hopes of meeting an estranged uncle, finally free from the war-afflicted Land of The Princes, with a spirit that could not be broken by all the struggles he's seen from the lands from whence he came. The heart pulls at his strong-willed, trusting, grateful and humble character, in spite of everything he's had to go through.

Matthew Tysz effectively captures the action in this magically catastrophic vying for power and riches, the casualties that come with it all and the traumas and emotions in the mix. From cover to cover, you are engrossed in how the narrative unfolds and the enchanting build-up to the excitement of it all just as you are seated in the calm of the storm. Learning about Voulhire as if it were a land that I could wake up tomorrow and decide to visit is what I enjoyed most about reading this book. I could even locate the fictional places in the map provided if I were so inclined.

I enjoyed We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies so much that no negative aspects come to mind. It is a well-scripted piece of literature with carefully considered cliff-hangers that make you gasp and nearly burst into tears for more. I will definitely read the rest of the books in the series just because I don't want the story to end!

I give it a 4 out of 4 rating because of how well thought out the entirety of the structure and storyline are, from the introduction to the glossary of unfamiliar terms exclusive to the world of Voulhire. Reading this book, I was personally in the land of Voulhire, experiencing all of the happenings first-hand, even though not all the parts of the book are narrated in first-person. Hats off to Tysz's use of imagination and creativity.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking to escape their reality and jump into a magical world of twists and turns. It's not for the sensitive as there are uses of profanity and stomach-punching humour of an adult nature.
