[Following is a volunteer review of "Toni the Superhero" by R.D. Base.]
Toni the Superhero, by R.D. Base, is a children's book that introduces an intriguing and exemplary character. Toni is an extraordinary boy who also does ordinary things, and while he has a lot of responsibilities that come with being a superhero, the book shows the other side of him. What kind of person is Toni, and what does he enjoy doing in his spare time? Pick up a copy of this delightful read to find out.
The first feature of this book that stands out for me is its simplistic nature. The author wrote the book for children who are just learning how to read, so Toni the Superhero consists entirely of short sentences and one sentence per page. There is also a lot of intention behind employing simple words. The book is a quick read, and for beginners, who have a short attention span, this feature will be extremely helpful.
Toni is also a character that children will relate to, and it was a nice touch by the author to employ such a character. A little boy in a superhero costume piqued my interest, but what made me even more engaged was the kind of activities Toni was involved in throughout the book. He shows children that doing ordinary things with a smile and giving your best makes you extraordinary. Toni is quite an educative character, and he is worthy of emulation.
Also, the book heavily includes colorful images that depict the activities narrated in the sentences. Children will encounter pictures of animals, trees, books, and crayons, which are items that they will pay more attention to. The author has adequately pulled out all the stops to ensure that this read captivates the target audience.
The only thing I did not like about the book was that several other characters were included, but they were not named. Besides this minor issue, I do not have any complaints. Toni the Superhero is also an exceptionally well-edited book. All things considered, I rate the book four out of four stars. Children between the ages of 2 and 5 who are just learning how to read will enjoy this book.
