Review of Bluewater Walkabout
The author of this book, Tina Dreffin, has always been a wild spirit, evident through her narrations of touring the cornfields with her sister when she was younger to even her latest suggestion of travelling by sea from South Africa to the Bahamas. Bluewater Walkabout is the product of that travel. In this book, she takes the readers back to her struggles while trying to make a name for herself in the corporate world, working as a real estate agent, lacking money, and facing sexual harassment. Her life changed when she met her husband, Peter. He brought out the wild side in her, and he loved her.
They immediately agreed when the idea of sailing halfway around the world came up. At this point, they already had two sons who would join them along with their friends. Their first stop is the Kruger National Park in South Africa. They are joined by some members of Tina's immediate family, and they all go on an expedition in the wild, mainly to see the big five. After a scary yet eventful experience, they begin to place the finishing touches on their sea trip as regards the boat and the winds. Read on to experience the innings of sea travel.
This book is one that I'm sure a lot of people would enjoy reading. It has the proper dose of adventure and life experience. The author, Tina, used flashbacks while putting together the story. This showcased her life at earlier stages, working as a real estate agent. Then we got to see how she married Peter; a happy moment. Then we were let into her pain, having lost her baby; I'm glad she could get over that. The loss of a child is never an easy experience. Part of this book I enjoyed so much was the wildlife experience; I would love to visit these animals in the wild someday, but for now, I'd have to make do with Tina's descriptions.
I disliked nothing about this story; I felt the book was an extension of Tina's many gifts; she is very good at describing and writing. I have to admit that at one point, I got scared for Tina's family crossing the Cape of Storms, but I decided to relax and see how it would go. There were some navigation terms in this book; it would have helped to have a glossary. However, it wasn't much of a problem because I could make out some of them through the context in which they appeared. I spotted some minor errors while reading this. However, I believe the book was professionally edited.
Bluewater Walkabout receives a rating of 4 out of 4 from me; the plot, descriptions, and arrangements were all in sync, and I enjoyed reading the book. I recommend this book to audiences interested in sea travel. Adventure and non-fiction lovers can also pick this up.
