We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz, is a book that introduces readers to a fantasy book series that combines magic, science, religion, and politics. It is set in a world made up of Cosmos and Caromentis. When an Emperor decides to send his four sons away from the palace to occupy separate islands. A power struggle gives birth to war. Our main character, Galen Bray runs for his life. He executes his escape. Initially, It involves him running through the forest to reach the shore while evading arrows. Additionally, He must make sure to board a ship that will take him on a voyage to Voulhire. Finally, he will acquire his inheritance in Magnum Caelum.

Northeast of Magnum Caelum, exists a small town named Hillport. Recently, Lords have been dying one after another in Hillport. Lord Eldus Alderman is appointed to give solace to the people of Hillport. Beyond the sea from Hillport, one can catch a glimpse of Lorcia’s Isle. A small-heavily-guarded prison harbouring rumours. Meanwhile, a king without a queen resides in the capital city, Soulhire. King Wilhelm Arcolo must always be wary of his council as they are plotting against him.

I like the way Matthew Tysz describes certain places in the book. My favourite part is when Matthew Tysz describes how a city looks like a dish that has been placed on a green pasture under the sun. I also like that author uses a figure of speech to compare the sunrise’s view of a castle to a painting on a wall. He continues to compare the world inside the book to an egg yolk. It is quite rare to read a book that compares its world to food. Matthew Tysz uses everyday objects to describe complex things in the book. Readers can easily create vivid pictures in their minds. I also like how gullible and inquisitive the main character is. I like how he asks simple questions in a childlike manner. He is a young man who asks simple questions that anyone would expect someone his age to know. The questions are so simple that even a reader would know the answers. It is very amusing. We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies has been professionally edited. It is free from grammatical errors.

The part I did not like about the book, was the dialogue being mixed with slang words. This breaks immersion. The use of slang words sticks out like a sore thumb in the book. It does not suit the book’s period. I also did not like how the book spends time emotionally investing readers into characters to later kill them off. This can make the readers feel robbed or lose interest.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The author took his time to write a book that has a believable story with exciting characters existing in a world grounded in reality. Each character has motives and beliefs that play out well in the book.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to read books that discuss politics, religion, and science in magical worlds in a realistic way. The book should not be read by a person who is sensitive to profane language, violence, and rape.
