Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies

[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
In his first book of an upcoming series, the author, Matthew Tysz, introduces the reader to a new world full of wonderment, kingdoms, and magic. We are Voulhire: A new Arrival under Great Skies is an extremely imaginative and epic story about the land of Voulhire and its inhabitants. This skillfully written saga pulls the reader into a whole universe—three actually—that Tysz has expertly crafted like the swords and spells of the warriors and mages in his tale. This first book sketches out the geography of the world and its fascinating characters, as well as some history of Voulhire and its surrounding nations. The story follows several characters and their lives in different cities and towns, and then masterfully weaves them together with subtlety that keeps the reader wanting to know more.
As a reader of mainly non-fiction books, this book was a delightful surprise to me, and has me eagerly anticipating the following stories in the We are Voulhire series. I particularly enjoyed how well written and easily Matthew Tysz’s words flowed on the page. His command of writing dialog was apparent; it made me feel like I was actually there within the castle walls. He includes a map of Voulhire which makes it easy to imagine the locations of the events that take place and the various journeys of the rich characters he introduces. There is also a glossary of terms and names at the end of the book to further flesh-out his world. I enjoyed that he follows a main character, a young man named Galen, who is a newcomer to Voulhire. This makes it easier to introduce certain aspects of this new nation as you are seeing it through his eyes. The thrilling action sequences had me staying up much too late in order to stay in this amazing world that Tysz has created.
There was no mention of an editor, however, I could not find any mistake and would say that this writing is flawless. If I had to give one piece of constructive criticism, it would be that the story could have used a romantic aspect. Although, since it’s just the first instalment in a series of books, there may yet be a love story to come. We’ll have to read to find out.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars due to its many interesting characters and detailed sequences of events. The author is very adept at writing fantasy; he creates characters that seem real due to the lively dialogue and weaves a tapestry with the world he’s imagined. We are Voulhire has combat, magic, politics, scandals, and adventure. I look forward to more offerings from Matthew Tysz.
I would recommend this book to adults and mature young adults who enjoy fantasy, adventure and science-fiction. The book has some profanity, violence and mature themes, and would not be appropriate for children or sensitive young adults. Also, a warning is due because the story has elements of child sexual abuse that are not detailed or described but mentioned a few times.
