Usually, when we think about childbirth and parenting, we immediately think about the mother and what she goes through. But what about the father? They are important as well, and they have an important role to play. When the author was about to become a father, he wanted to read all he could about the role a father should play, but he couldn't find any books geared toward fathers. All the books were written with the mother in mind. He decided to help other fathers by sharing his experience in this book and giving his advice on how to navigate fatherhood.

The First Time Father by Thomas Alfie is a concise guide for new fathers. The author writes the book, keeping in mind that most new fathers have no clue as to what they are getting themselves into. The book was simple and easy to read. It had bold headings for persons who wish to re-read. This ten-chapter book covers topics such as what to do before the baby arrives, what to bring to the hospital, how to prepare yourself mentally for a baby, as well as the different styles of parenting you can employ.

I did not dislike anything about the book. The author has an excellent storytelling voice as he shared his personal experience of how he became a father. I enjoyed reading the chapter on how to balance work and home life. Fathers must get paternity leave from work in order to help out around the home and bond with the baby. The author posits that going back to work after a leave can be hard. The author shared how he struggled with this and the things he did to make the transition easy. The author said he felt like his child would not want to play with him since he will be away at work. This is a fear that many new parents have.

The First Time Father deserves a perfect score of 4 out of 4 stars. It was professionally edited, as I only found two minor errors. I liked that the author did a lot of research and was able to bring facts that can be useful to new dads.

This is the perfect guide for new fathers and men wanting to become fathers in the future. You will learn that you don't need to be perfect in everything you do as long as you have the intent to be the best dad you could. I would recommend this book to all dads as well as godfathers. There is a lot to be learned from it.
