[Following is a volunteer review of ""LOGJAM of a Beauteous MIND"" by Peter Simon Karp.]
LOGJAM of a Beauteous MIND: An Infinitely Gentle Woman is a beautiful, heartwarming memoir written by Peter Simon Karp. It retells the story of Mona's, his late wife's, battle with cancer. It starts from the beginning. Not just from when Mona was diagnosed with cancer but from the time of their first meeting. The majority of the book does focus on Mona’s time with cancer, though. The book was written in the first-person viewpoint of Peter. After her return from Europe, Mona came down with shortness of breath and a cough. It prompts her and her husband to go to the hospital, where she is diagnosed with stage IV cancer. The diagnosis stunned them because Mona has been health-conscious and a nonsmoker her entire life.
The positives about this book, I would say, are the things that captured my attention. The first thing was the sweetness and passion that the author conveyed through the pages. I believe sincere love is one of the most beautiful things in the world, and it is not always the bases of many types of relationships. The way the author spoke about Mona, the words used, the choice of situations to focus on, and the emotions conveyed to the reader proved his sincerity. It showed the story as not only a memoir of Mona’s battle with cancer but a memoir of their love. The second thing that caught my attention was the clarity and conciseness of the descriptions of the scenes. This is because of the ease with which Peter’s writing style conveyed all the information on complicated issues, not just the medical jargon and diagnosis but the emotions they felt at the time too. The last thing that caught my attention was how insightful and broad the pieces of information about cancers were in the book.
The book had nothing negative about it. It offers insight into the devastation brought about by disease to many families. At the same time, it shows how much care and love for one another can positively impact painful situations. The book was very touching. It makes the reader feel intimately present in the scenes taking place. The book highlights the confusion, struggle, and pain that come with random diagnoses of diseases.
I give this book a 4 out of 4. Although I found some typos, spelling, punctuation, and grammar mistakes in the book, ultimately, they were less than ten. It was a loving and honest account of a couple's struggle with the prospect of the death of one of them looming above them. The book also brings awareness to cancer, especially lung cancer, a disease most people do not know much about.
I recommend this book to people looking for a heartrending story on the fight for survival and love. I think the book would also be suitable for people wanting to understand the pain and struggle that accompany cancer diagnoses for people dealing with it and their families.
