[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is the first book of the fantasy series called We are Voulhire and is written by Matthew Tysz. The protagonist of the story is Galen Bray, who has found the misfortune of growing up in a war-torn nation. But then fortune smiles upon him, which causes his luck to change, and in a desperate attempt to attain a better life, he flees his homeland for greener pastures that hold with it hope and the means to be a success, which has not been on the cards for Galen from which he came. In this new mysterious land called Voulhire, Galen arrives as a humbled man after going through the struggles he did before. He sees that life is much different, that people are able to live a life of freedom and achieve the happiness he would only read about in books. He wears his heart on his sleeve and does not judge anyone. Voulhire as with many other countries of its time, has a social class with the wealthiest people living in thriving cities, knowing luxuries many living in the poorer parts of Voulhire can only dream of one day partaking in. In this new land, Galen discovers that magic is real, with mages wielding it for the greater good or pure evil. The king of Voulhire is good-hearted and wants his land to prosper. He does everything in his power to make that possible by treating everyone with respect and always trying to be as fair as possible. But prosperity goes hand in hand with envy, and there are those that hide in the shadows just waiting to cause the downfall of Voulhire, some being inside of Voulhire itself and others being outsiders. So the king has to at all times have his wits about him to prevent bloodshed from rearing its head at his kingdom's doorstep, but will he be able to do so in time, and just how many innocent lives will it cost before he finds out what is lurking in the shadows?
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a well-written piece of literature that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. I enjoyed the character growth Galen undergoes. He becomes more confident in himself as he ventures through Voulhire. I enjoyed finding out how magic is utilized by using dance as a way to bring forth your innermost emotions, which can cause your spells to be so much more powerful. The reference guide at the end of the book was of great help, and I would strongly suggest that you go through it if you want to understand the book better.
What I disliked about the book is that it has a slow pace, with a small amount of action taking place knowing that there is a war raging in Galen’s homeland. I would have enjoyed reading more about that war and finding out who is standing at the forefront as the one in the best position to win the war that has been spanning for many years already.
This book takes you on a journey during a time when people took what they could get and were more appreciative. It has mystery and suspense, which has you trying to find out more as new enemies come to light. It has magic, friendship, and tragedy, which makes it a well-rounded book. It is also professionally edited. For those reasons, I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies takes you on a path that is set in the distant past, where arrows and swords were the weapons of choice. It has magic wielded by mages as the go-to means to end things quickly. I would recommend this novel to those who like reading fantasy books, but with the horrific ways people are killed and the profanity, I would suggest this book to those that are 16 years and older.
