[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Mathew Tsyz begins as Castle Hillport is attacked by a powerful evil magician in a coordinated attack which leaves many injured or dead. It is evident later in the book, that the assailant uses dark magic. This is a continuous theme in the book where people who want to inflict serious damage on other people use black magic. This fantasy novel draws the reader in from the first page. We are quickly introduced to all the fantastical aspects of the book from the beginning and the reader gets to go on a journey in this land filled with adventure and magic.
Right after this unfortunate event, we meet our main protagonist Galen Bray, who has just suffered a loss in his life. He is traveling to the Land of Princes to Magnum Caelum after his uncle summoned him but before he gets there, his uncle passes away. However, Galen decides to still go ahead with his journey as he is the only heir to his uncle’s inheritance. He meets up with his uncle’s executioner Rowan, with whom they become good friends. We are also introduced to the political landscape of Hillport. With the political climate being tense as a new leader is elected into power, it leaves the reader wondering whether he will be able to correct the mistakes of his predecessors against the wishes of those still in power or if he will show the people a new just way forward.
I liked the pace of the book. It did not feel rushed nor did it feel too slow. I enjoyed the action in the book and I found the scenes to be well-executed and digestible. I also like that the story has an original storyline, and the author did pretty well for their first book in the series. I also enjoyed the physical aspect of this book. One can visualize the different landscapes in the book as well as the general layout of the land. A map is also provided in the book which allows the reader to tell what lands are where.
There are both light as well as dark themes featured in the book. The author discusses love and friendship as well as the importance of family. The themes are well explored and often have a series of events building up to them. The darker themes include dark magic, death, betrayal, and war. I did not dislike anything about this book. I thought it was a well-written story with an interesting premise.
I rate this book four out of four stars. I enjoyed reading it and I also found it to be exceptionally well-edited. It’s an interesting book and I would recommend it to an adult looking for a good fantasy read as it contains mildly profane language.
