[Following is a volunteer review of "Voice Of a Mummy" by Kay A. Oliver.]
As an avid reader of historical fiction and historical records, I have come to respect and appreciate the archaeological and palaeontological sciences. These two disciplines have paved the way to knowing and understanding the pasts of our ancestors, their lives, and their struggles. Without archaeology, we would have never learned about the Ancient empires and how they managed to survive life.
Dr. Kaili Worthy’s life has been spent around mummies and artefacts; she has been trying to identify them and their way of life. For her, this has been a satisfactory feeling, but her main goal is to discover the remains of the famed queen of Egypt, Cleopatra. However, what she stumbles on is the other best thing, the bones of her daughter, Cleopatra Selene. Whilst studying this great find, she finds herself being able to communicate with the queen herself, well, with the help of another spirit of another mummy. Afraid to be labelled as insane, she keeps this heavy secret to herself. Her husband, Derek Worthy, shares in this secret too. He is a policeman who is hounded by a myriad of cases at work. When a woman and her child are found dead, he acquires the case, and seemingly, the chances of finding the killer are close to none. Derek has to adopt an orthodox way to find the killer and bring them to justice.
Voice Of A Mummy is the summary of a life of an archaeologist at its best. The book has been written in the third person point of view of all the important human characters and spiritual characters. This helps the book get a wide scope of events and emotions running throughout the book. The story is simple enough to follow through and understand. What I liked most about the book is the short and precise chapters in the book. This has helped to eliminate any boredom from the book. Kay A. Oliver has written this book in an evenly paced manner, bestowing on the reader an energized read throughout the story.
The book appears to be professionally edited, as I came across a few errors. Surprisingly, the book does not contain any profanity, but has a respectable number of graphic scenes that pertain to murder. For me, the book does not contain any negative aspects, as the author manages to iron out kinks within the story. Nevertheless, this is a fantastic book to read. I am happy to award this book four out of four stars.
This book is suitable for a mature audience of historical fiction enthusiasts and crime thriller fans.
