[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
Galen lived in an area that had been devastated by war. He had already resigned himself that death was around the corner, either by sword or hunger, unpleasant nonetheless. Then, out of the blue, a man notifies him that his uncle has passed and he has inherited his estate. The door to a new and better world in Voulhire had opened up for Galen, and he jumped through. His wish had been that he had evaded danger and could live out the rest of his life ordinary, tending to his newly acquired forge. Unfortunately, that is not what legends are made of.
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first of a series of fantasy books that explore the events that happen in the kingdom of Voulhire. Like any wealthy land, the kingdom is appealing and seems like a haven. However, threats to its safety and prosperity surround the land. Arguably, the biggest of them all is the existence of an imprisoned mage not too far from the shores of the kingdom.
The author does well to create the atmosphere, delve into the setting, and introduce the characters in a way that will interest readers. He puts significant emphasis on understanding Voulhire so that the reader can relate to the context and underlying thoughts of events and characters in the book. The reader can quickly pick up on the emotions and motivations of each character, thus allowing them to develop attachments to the plot.
One of the strengths of the book is the number of twists in the direction and feel of events. There are things throughout the book that the reader would have never seen coming or expected, creating a major shock. It is quite surprising and intriguing to see how different characters deal with external forces and how that affects the ending.
There was nothing I disliked about the book as it was humorous and engaging. The author used a great deal of wit and built the story up beautifully such that the reader is never lost.
The book was professionally edited, didn’t have any spelling mistakes, and was a joy to read from beginning to end. As a result, I give We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.
I would recommend this book to people who are fans of fantasy and drama, such as Lord of the Rings, as this book has great characters and events.
