Mirko Beljanski dedicated his life to diligently studying plant extracts in a successful attempt to discover their medical benefits. He and his wife, Monique, worked together as researchers for 49 years. Mirko had earned a Ph.D. in molecular biology, leading him to the prominent position of Director of Research at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. They made great strides with their research, managing to aid president François Mitterrand in his battle with prostate cancer.

After being candidly told by his doctors that his cancer had spread too far for them to do anything, Mitterrand went in search of possible alternatives. He found these alternatives with Dr. de Kuyper, a doctor using Mirko’s plant extracts. Ultimately, this would lead to the arrest of Mirko Beljanski. Winning the War on Cancer is a non-fiction book by Sylvie Beljanski in which she details her parents' work and how it influenced her life.

Cancer is a curse that has plagued the world for an impossibly long time with no relief. Over the many years that cancer has been a problem, countless doctors have worked to eradicate the disease. They have come up with extensive surgeries, intensive chemotherapies, diets, and all sorts to attempt to provide sufferers some sort of peace. While there have undoubtedly been many success stories, cancer treatments nevertheless leave a lot to be desired.

The prospect of alternative medicine is an intriguing one. After reading this book, I believe it should have a far more notable position in the medical industry. It seems to remain an issue, as it is believed by many that it will adversely affect the incomes of big medicine companies. However, in this insightful read Beljanski says the aim is not to replace traditional medicine and treatments, but rather to come up with a way where both can complement each other for the benefit of the patient.

While many may believe alternative medicine is something to scoff at or roll your eyes at, there is scientific proof that it can positively impact cancer patients. In the book, Beljanski mentions different plants: Pao Pereira and Rauwfolia Vomitoria. These plants have been proven to work against various cancers, like pancreatic and ovarian cancer.

I found this book to be incredibly captivating and well-written. I genuinely appreciated the considerable amount of personality injected into the story by the author. I believe she possesses an incredible talent as a storyteller, adding plenty to my enjoyment of the book. I noticed it was exceptionally edited, as I found no errors. I have nothing negative to say and, as a direct result of the reasons mentioned above, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

I would earnestly recommend this book to readers who typically enjoy medically motivated non-fiction books. I believe it would be well-suited and appropriate for readers of all ages.
