Craig W. Stanfill’s novel Terms of Service is the perfect embodiment of futuristic fiction, fantasy as well as science fiction. The action takes place in what seems to be a different dimension. The main character, Kim, works for an artificial intelligence company, which she liked at first, but it soon became routine and unpleasant for her. The novel revolves around Kim trying to escape the monotony she lives in.

The book starts with a warning, letting the reader know that the text was translated from Panglobal, the language spoken in the world where the action takes place, into English, hence the inconsistencies in vocabulary. Moreover, it explains that in Panglobal there are no third-person pronouns, therefore, the pronoun she is used for everyone. This information gives an insight into the society in question. This never-seen-before idea only makes the book more intriguing; making the reader believe there exists such a place and language.

The details with which the actions and feelings of the characters have been described are incredible. Everything is built up so vividly, it is a pleasure to read and feel what is put on the table. A very good example of this is the accent put on the colour beige. Everything was beige, thus giving a hint of the routine Kim has to put up with and explaining her lack of motivation. Everything feels so real and one can almost feel the pain Kim has to go through. The opening mood of the book is rather depressing, I would say.

In terms of editing, I did not find any errors or inconsistencies. It is a professionally written novel, with a well-put-together plot. Stanfill writes in such a way that his characters and places haunt you even days after you have finished reading. It is a very pleasurable read that keeps the reader on the hook throughout the whole narration. I found myself constantly absorbed in the text so much so that I could not put the book down. The construction of the plot and the editing are flawless.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars mainly for the reasons mentioned above, but also because the plot anticipates what the human race will have to experience if technology keeps evolving and if it eventually gets to a point when it will rule over the world. Kim’s existential drama seems to be just a sample of what people could end up living in the future. The world depicted in the novel seems to be bound to a not-so-far-away future, after all. I recommend this book to any teenager who enjoys reading science fiction.
