Review of Play Golf Better Faster: The Little Golf Bag Book
Kalliope Barlis's book, Play Golf Better Faster: The Little Golf Bag Book From Weekend Golfer to Pro Golfer in Two Years, is similar to the original, larger “Play Golf Better Faster” version. It provides new strategies that will lead to a better outcome. For example, it teaches you how to take shots from unusual positions, such as side hill, uphill, and downward positions. There are different stories and scenarios.
The contents section of this book is well-organized and divided into three sections: part one is “Using Your Brain,” and Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) is proven to be the ultimate tool for golfing your best. NLP says that everyone can get better because we all have the resources to do so. Changes begin with how we think. NLP helps us become more aware of how we think as we take in our five senses. Part two is “Practicing Golf” because each shot you take in practice can teach you something. If you don't reflect on each shot and find its positive aspect, then hitting ball after ball means nothing. This part includes practicing strategies as well. Do them and then see if your score improves while you're playing. Part three is “Playing Golf,” and it encourages you to pick a score you want at the end of the 18th hole, and then you play your game. This will help your unconscious mind move your conscious mind forward and help you get the score you want.
I liked the illustrations in the book. Through the illustrations, it is much easier to interpret the meaning of what is being said. There are also illustrations showing how you should hold your club. I liked the author's idea of turning negative experiences into positive ones, to create better memories now and create better resources for the future. The brain does not distinguish between an imagined action and a memory of an actually performed action. Because they are just pictures, the brain sees them the same way. Either way, you are strengthening your memory skills for future shots. The author even created a three-step Swish Pattern to change undesirable outcomes. I concur with the author when she states that it is important to adjust your attitude when playing golf. If you tell yourself that you are going to get a hole in one, and you imagine it happening in front of you, you can anchor that memory as though it happened. I appreciate Kalliope's honesty about the fact that it's not worth investing in expensive equipment, and that you only need one set of golf clubs fitted to your swing. After all, your mind is the most influential golf equipment. I also appreciated that the author avoided using golf terminology, since I was unable to understand them in the first book.
I disliked that this book mirrored the first book almost exactly, except for a few extra insights that were brought to light and a lot more illustrations that made it easier to understand. However, Kalliope's one goal is to improve your golf game in the most effective and fastest way possible. I see this book as the newly improved 2.0 version of “Play Golf Better Faster.”
I only encountered 2 errors in this book, indicating that it was professionally edited. I like that the advice in this book can be applied to any subject, not just golf. I rate this book five out of five stars.
I recommend this book to all golfers who want to play their best. Since the strategies are extremely diverse, this book will also appeal to you if you are proficient in another sport. Those who are interested in developing new strategies should read Play Golf Better Faster: The Little Golf Bag Book.
