[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
Galen Bray, a naive young man, risks his life by fleeing the Land of the Princes, where you either die slowly or become an extortion target. He spent a few days on a ship before arriving in Magnum Caelum, where he meets Mayor Malcolm and Rowan, his uncle's executor. He moved into his late uncle's house and began working in the steel business that his uncle had left him. The mayor helps him settle down and get his money from the bank. Rowan gives him advice about money and shows him how the business operates.
Matthew Tysz goes into great detail about the history of the Land of the Princes and how the war wreaked havoc on it. He also delves deeper into the kingdom of Voulhire, a flourishing kingdom on the verge of destruction because of previous lords Meldorath and Orlin's sinister intentions. King Wilhelm has dispatched Lord Eldus Alderman, a former judge, to resurrect the town's economy and restore trust. Midius Maido and Lady Ingara are the enemies of Eldus, waiting for his downfall, but King believes Eldus can succeed. The book has many characters that contribute to the plot and keep the reader interested in suspense, thrillers, and mysteries.
I liked how Lord Eldus attempted to understand who Meldorath was. He visits a nearby school, reaches out to young Stanley and Bartrus, and reads some of Meldorath's notes that Beverly brought up. To protect the people of Voulhire, Lord Eldus opened his home, where his library ends up on fire. I also liked that the book has an alphabetical guide, a map of Voulhire, and a list of characters explaining who they are and what they do.
This is a fantastic book, but it contains some elements that I did not enjoy. Matthew did not reveal who was haunting Lord Eldus and young Stanley. I had to guess that Meldorath was using magic to silence Eldus. Marshus survived the attack, but we do not know what happened to him. It would have been better for Matthew to tell us how he survived.
Apart from the negative aspect I mentioned above, this book is professionally edited. There were no grammar, spelling, or typographical errors. Therefore, I will rate it 4 out of 4 stars. Again, without a doubt, this is one of the best books ever. I will rate it 5 out of 5 stars.
I would recommend We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies to adults and teens who enjoy reading fantasy thrillers. This book is not suitable for children because of its profanity.
