Review of Terms of Service
Being different may either be a curse or a blessing. What do you do when you find yourself in a world controlled by AIs, where humans can't think for themselves? Do you try to blend in? Or do you go in search of the truth and break out of the system? Or which would u rather prefer, the harsh truth, or pleasant hallucination?
Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill is a sci-fi fantasy book depicting a world where humans and AIs live together. Kim, like other humans, was taken away from her birth giver at age four. Due to the strong bond they both shared, Kim developed a sense of individualism which made her different from everyone else. After her failed moderation, she was made to believe and live the life she never wanted. After being employed by the Artificial Intelligence Company, Kim had the desire to work with a real Order Four AI. Due to differences and self-will, her dreams came true, and she created Kimberly, her own AI. Just when everything seemed like a dream, she was struck with the harsh reality that everything was all for control. Now she chooses to break out, but will she succeed?
The style of this book is unique, and it's one thing I like about it. The writer's style is captivating, and his inclusion of futuristic terms and ideas would make readers marvel. In Kim's world where everything you do is seen and controlled by AIs and humans can't think for themselves, it made me wonder about our present world. Craig's ideas and how he implemented them in the book are amazing. The gender neutralization in this book where everyone is characterized as a female and identified as she, where everyone wears beige colored clothes, and self-identification is done in plural will amaze readers. The absurdity of it all kept me glued to the book to see where it all goes. All I can say is that it all seemed strange, but Craig did an excellent job of testing my imagination.
With all I've read in this book, my only disapproval is the use of drugs to induce intimacy. It's both offsetting and nerve breaking, and I rule against it. Aside from this, there's nothing else I dislike about the book. It's exceptionally well edited, has a wonderful storyline, is interesting, and is capable of testing the reader's imagination and knowledge about the artificial intelligence world. Although at some point in the book, the gender neutralization got to me and I tried to figure out the genders of the characters. Due to this, I can't say which gender Kim belongs to. Despite this, it's still an amazing read.
With all being said, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I believe this book well deserves my rating. Readers who are fascinated by the artificial intelligence world will love this book. I also recommend this book to lovers of sci-fi and anyone looking for an interesting book. This book isn't suitable for the young audience because it contains some erotic scenes.
