In Different Family Structures by Mildred Stallworth, the author uses only ten brief chapters to write about the diverse types of families and their purposes. Some of the types of families noted that we all knew about are nuclear, extended, and single-parent families. Due to the rise in teenage pregnancies and drug addiction, there is a growth in another type of family called the grandparent family. I did not know this was a type of family, and there are many others you can learn about.

So the question was proposed: Why do we require a family? From the time we are born, we require a family for support and to teach us values and discipline. The author rightfully stated that a family wasn't just those to whom we are related by blood but also people that we share a relationship with, someone who teaches us about life and makes us feel safe. Not all households are the same, and different parents implement various parenting styles to raise their children. Some use the authoritative parenting style, where, although you teach children right from wrong, you allow them room to improve and be unique individuals, unlike the authoritarian parenting style. If you want to learn more about the various parenting styles and the advantages and disadvantages of each one, you can get a copy of this book.

There were many beneficial aspects to this book. The author conveys her message straight forward in layman's terms so that any reader can pick up this book and gain knowledge. It can also be completed in just a few hours, so it can be quickly read by readers who don't have much time in the day to read.

The information that stuck with me the most was the diverse kinds of abuse. For example, most people, when they hear about abuse, think of someone hitting them, but did you know there are different kinds of abuse? It can also be emotional, where your family belittles you and manipulates you into feeling like something is wrong with you to control you. These are merely some of the insights you can gain from this book. The author compiled all the information you will need to know on the topic of family in one read.

The only negative aspect I would say is that the first picture that a reader sees as a family is a same-sex couple. This may be offensive and a deterrent to many readers, and although it is one of the families that we have today, a picture of a traditional family would have been a more appropriate picture of the first family a reader sees. I only recognized a few grammatical errors, which showed it was professionally edited. I, therefore, rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend Different Family Structures to any reader who desires holistic knowledge of what a family is. Also, as a treat, there are quotes by celebrities inside.
