Toni the Superhero by R.D. Base is the first children's book I have had the honor to review. Reading is crucial for children. When children are reading, they develop their own meanings for the various new words they are exposed to. For example, children exposed to medical, creative, and historical literature at a young age have a proper perspective on life at an early age and learn to form their thoughts and opinions based on the knowledge they gain from reading. Toni's portrayal as a superhero for the main character is an intelligent decision, as kids enjoy fantasy things like superheroes. Toni is wearing his superhero costume, cape, and eye mask while participating in everyday activities that kids can even do without superpowers. For example, we see Toni playing with his friends and sweeping the kitchen. Significantly, the book focuses on things that Toni does that do not show him using his superpowers, as it shows kids that even though he is a superhero, he is just like them because he still has to do chores. Toni is happily doing his chores and eating his food, which can positively affect children and show them that these things are not bad as long as Toni, a good superhero, is doing them. I recommend this book to parents and caregivers as it depicts the good things children can do even if they do not have superpowers. Children can be just as good as Toni by helping their parents or caregivers by doing chores.
The pictures are beautifully illustrated, and it is easy to tell what Toni is doing on each page for children who are not yet able to read and need to be read to. For example, it is clear that Toni likes to read as he is drawn holding a book while many other books lay around him.
I give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
