Review of Terms of Service
[Following is a volunteer review of "Terms of Service" by Craig W. Stanfill.]
The idea of AI regulating our lives may seem far-fetched, but in truth, it's our reality. Perhaps not as dramatic as presented in this book, but real nonetheless.
Terms of Service Subject to Change Without Notice is the story of Kim, a young AI trainer. She is attempting to find her feet in a world that is closely monitored by AIs. Kim, like most citizens, is satisfied with her job, circle of friends, and almost everything around her. However, she has a nagging feeling of emptiness on the inside. In her melancholy, she tries to discover who she is. Suddenly, her best friend, Shan, appears out of the blue. The two planned a biking expedition, and this event led to a nostalgic feeling for the past, which influenced further intuitive behavior. She is initially able to enjoy this spontaneity, but soon things unravel as she catches a glimpse of the tightly guarded secrets of the powerful company. This eye-opening experience taught her some things about her past that are responsible for her emptiness. At this point, a decision is required, but who makes that decision? How would she and the hierarchy react to this event?
Admittedly, I have not read many sci-fi novels. This is by far the most fascinating sci-fi story I've had the pleasure of reading. Craig W. Stanfill presents a compelling fictional tale by creating a unique and completely original world. Despite its bizarre singular pronouns, this world has unique names for days and a new language. Additionally, the author's satirical undertone in the story is both refreshing and thought-provoking. Looking at the book title in our context demonstrates how ignorant we are of our privacy. We intuitively click on "I agree" to the terms of service without a second thought. Another positive aspect of the story is characterization. The characters were meticulously developed, which drives the plot. Albeit slowly, the reader gets to understand the characters and the stories behind their decisions.
Despite this novel's many positive attributes, I disliked, for example, the carefree use of drugs and alcohol in the clubs. I understand the author's penchant for more conflict and drama, but I still find it excessive and unnecessary. The plot was compelling regardless of the circumstances. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed the story and the author's style of writing.
The book appears to be exceptionally well-edited because I did not notice any errors. In addition, the imagery, suspense, and drama are admirable. For these reasons, I rate it five out of five stars.
Finally, I recommend it to fans of sci-fi and thought-provoking novels. I would also recommend it to students or professionals in the AI industry.
