[Following is a volunteer review of "Terms of Service" by Craig W. Stanfill.]
Terms of Review by Craig W. Stanfill is a compelling story about a futuristic society that seems to live in harmony with A.Is. The lead character, Kim, is an obedient law abiding citizen but everything changes when she reunites with a childhood friend. Secrets are revealed when she starts to work for the blunt and cruel Director. Everything Kim thought her life consisted of is not what it seemed. A tension building sci-fi story that will enthrall the reader.
I was enraptured but the captivating and thrilling story of this book. The author, with his background in the I.T field, uses the knowledge to build a realistic world which is vastly different from the one we live in now but is still plausible and not too far fetch that it would have lost its credibility in my opinion. The main character, Kim, is a tenacious and curios character but the quality about her that I liked most was that she had doubts and worries about what each action would have in her life and anxiety from a rough upbringing. It creates a relatable fault that I, as the reader, can grow fond of throughout the story. The Director is a character that I loved to hate. The Director was a brilliant character to show what the leaders would do to get what they want. The oppressive nature of the leaders of this society is thrilling as it creates friction when Kim has to make life altering decisions. I especially loved the use of intense, almost shocking, scenes that create this dark underlying current that runs under this seemingly perfect world that Kim lives in.
The only negative aspect to this book was that as someone who chooses to read positive stories, it seems a bit 'doom and gloom' for most of the story. It might be swayed by my personal beliefs and morals so I think it's a brilliant play by the author because it challenges the reader to think about what they would have done in this futuristic world. Some scenes felt cruel to read but I was impressed that the author added those scenes because it shows what the citizens had to endure to live in this world. In essence I believe some scenes were tough to read but without them the thrill of what the main character goes through would be minor and non-threatening.
As this is a compelling read that I was drawn in completely and the fact that the book looked professionally edited, I will give this book 5 out of 5 stars. Due to the nature and the complex, vast amount of information that the reader must consume, plus the adult subject matter of some of the scenes I would suggest that adults and ages up, would be more suitable to read this book.
