[Following is a volunteer review of "In It Together (2nd Edition Hardcover from B&N)" by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes.]
If you're looking for something that will challenge you as a reader and as a person, look no further than In It Together by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes. This book is a bit difficult to categorize, being a mixture of spirituality, self-help, philosophy, and a bit of humor. Hughes presents a fascinating thesis that unites people of all faiths (and those who profess no faith), people all across the political spectrum, and people from entirely different cultures, leaving ample wiggle room for interpretation based on your individual experiences. What is it that unites us all, actually? Humanity has common struggles, and the point of the book is to give us the tools to live a better life for ourselves and for others.
The book was very well-researched and put together, bringing many people together while also allowing for distinction among many different worldviews. He provided evidence and quotes from famous philosophers to back up his research. Very few people can present such a grand idea without picking an enemy, yet this book does that. Rather, the enemy is no longer external but an internal issue to deal with, and even then, he writes about reconciliation. His vocabulary is very clear and you need not be a university English student to read this.
There are several reviews that stated they could not put the book down. I would disagree. This book presents very difficult concepts. I want to clarify that the concepts are not difficult to understand but rather difficult to digest and accept. I would recommend pausing several times during the book and really taking time to meditate on the words, and then figuring out how to apply them to your life. It's not a light read. This is a very mentally, emotionally, and spiritually engaging book that requires full attention to be understood. If you're looking for something easy, light, and without substance, this is not the book for you. If you're ready for a journey towards peace, happiness, and understanding, you're at the right book.
I would rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars. It is well-written, deeply thought-out, and broad enough for anyone who reads nonfiction. I didn't notice any major typos or errors, making this an exceptionally well-edited book. It's not limited to philosophers, Christians, atheists, Muslims, or anyone in between. Even if you have no label on what you believe, this book can be a great tool for you to relate to others and find healing in your own life.
I highly recommend this to anyone and everyone seeking to deepen their understanding of themselves, others, or the world around them. The spirituality of the book is not limited to religious people, but rather broadens the definition so that everyone can be included. Whether you agree with everything or not, you will be different for having read this book. It belongs in the front of every Barnes & Noble store and deserves to be read by every corner of the internet.
