Review of The First Time Father
[Following is a volunteer review of "The First Time Father" by Thomas Alfie.]
'The majority of guys I know are scared straight when asked to hold a baby pre-fatherhood.' says author Alfie Thomas in his book The First Time Father.I agree with his observation which is a fact all over the world. Men are totally different from women in the case of not only parenthood but many other life activities! And this is by Nature! Women tried to work in the places of men and succeeded. But men when tried to replace women in the work of home and the family could not succeed except in a few cases.
The book The First Time Father by Alfie Thomas has everything that is required to achieve a successful fatherhood or more correctly successful motherhood! Whatever the author has included in the book is mainly concerned about the ways and procedures of becoming a perfect father and a partner equivalent to mother! The book contains chapters which are mainly about the Basic knowledge of pregnancy, How your baby comes month by month, Things to avoid ( the don'ts of pregnancy), Different stages of the labour, Transition with baby from hospital to home, Designing a baby nursery, Now a dad- guide to bonding best, Bathing and dressing a newborn and the new Dad mindset. This book covers all the aspects related to pregnancy, delivery ( childbirth ) and initial years of childhood of the son or daughter. The book also contains detailed knowledge regarding medical aspects of the same. The story is written by considering ' becoming a father of 21st century.' Author Alfie Thomas has used his own experience as first time father and also as father of next two children.
There are many positive aspects in the book. Whatever the author has shared from his experience is described in the best practical way. He has referred so many other books, as listed in the references. I liked the statements like: ' maybe you are considering an authoritarian parenting style while your partner is leaning more towards an authoritative ', ' Furthermore, you will find your own technique and the best way to master your new art. I’ve done it, and I’m sure all dads out there can do it as well. ' ' Your marriage of equal halves has one partner who, for biological reasons, needs her spouse to be particularly helpful and supportive right now.'
I must mention some negative points also. Some topics are described in details beyond the limits considering main intention of the book:for example BECOMING A DIAPER-CHANGING MACHINE,BURPING IT UP! Topics like ' Managing money & basic budgeting ' could have been avoided.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. I appreciate the efforts taken by author Alfie Thomas to collect the information from so many references. He has honestly shared his own experience. The editing of the book is professional.
I recommend this book to all the men and all women also ( to know what their life partner can do as life partner, in this most important task of their life) All the other persons who have direct or indirect involvement in the parenting will also like this book.
