[Following is a volunteer review of "Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures" by Catherine A. Pepe.]
The Millers are a wonderful family with great values that I found worthy of emulating. Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe is a story of hope and tolerance and is full of useful life lessons. Despite this being a children's book, I found it very interesting. The book is a must-read.
Donny was born with Down syndrome. Luckily, he has a loving family and, above all, a wonderful sister that is willing to do anything for him. Mary Grace and her family live in Witchita. Things are going well for the family until Mr. Miller, who is a priest, is chosen to undertake a mission in Africa. Donny and Mary Grace are to be sent to their grandparents in California for two years. In California, they have to deal with numerous challenges, including bullying in their new school. But how does the Grandma Gang fit into the story? To find out, get yourself a copy of this amazing book.
There are a lot of things to love about this book, including, for instance, the fact that it was inspired by real-life events. I also found it interesting that it was written during the recent COVID pandemic. I loved how the theme of tolerance was developed throughout the book. The world has numerous challenges, and we should try to make it more comfortable, especially for those who are differently abled. I also loved how the characters were developed, and the plotline was easy to understand, so the readers will not have a hard time. It would not be fair not to applaud the editors of the book for doing an exceptional job. This contributed immensely to the overall beauty of the book.
I did not find anything negative about the book. However, I would have loved to hear more about the encounters of the Millers in Africa. It would have given the book another perspective. All in all, this is a wonderful book.
I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars because of its unique way of passing on the intended message. The book is also very motivating, especially for people and families passing through unique challenges. I recommend the book to kids and those who love children's books.
