[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a brilliant and large-scale fantasy book. It is the first installation in a nine-series book. In the epic fantasy, we follow a man named Galen Bray, a man born in the Land of Princes whose destiny takes him to a new land. Pulled out of the civil war of his hometown, Galen inherits his deceased uncle’s forge in Voulhire, which is a stunning city in Voulhire, which is a fascinating kingdom. With the help of his uncle’s executor, Galen sets off on a unique adventure. We also follow King Wilhelm, king of Voulhire, and Lord Eldus, who make plans to lead their kingdom to glory. But dangers lurk on the horizon. Will Galen, King Wilhelm, and Lord Eldus accomplish their goals?
I must admit that I was hesitant when I started this book. As a fan of the fantasy genre, I have come to believe that perhaps I’ve seen everything there is to be seen. And this book, thankfully, proved me wrong. Instead of a shallow and underdeveloped book, I got a sneak peek into a series that has been built so well throughout that it is difficult not to get lost in what comes off as a brilliantly structured and intelligently crafted world.
A beautiful blend of psychology, philosophy, and political fiction can be found in this book. The writing style employed in this book is amazing. From serious world-building to great one-liners, you can find a bit of everything. I found no typos and no grammatical errors, which is a great sign when it comes to the editing of the book.
There is nothing that I disliked about this novel. In the very beginning, there is a website about the extensive world-building of Voulhire. You may come to learn of this world in a manner so detailed that it feels like your own. If you’re looking for a whole new world to dive into, I would definitely recommend this one.
I do have to mention that the pacing of the novel is quite slow. This is not a trilogy where a substantial chunk of the plot can be found in the first book. This book serves as more of an introduction to a new world that will have nine books. If you’re looking for a fast book, then this is not for you. If you’re in the mood to get to know a detailed world in a slow and natural manner, then this book is for you.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I would recommend it to fans of fantasy who don’t mind a bit of a long-term commitment.
