Review of Terms of Service
The book Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill is a sci-fi novel that follows the life of Kim, our protagonist. From birth, Kim’s life was controlled by the government with the help of AIs. Every aspect of her life was dictated, monitored, and analyzed. After a reckless event, Kim’s life plummets into chaos. Kim then gets an opportunity to make a change in the world by working with an Al, but the unexpected chance at a better life comes with many twists and strings attached. It also opens Kim up to the truth about her world and history. In the process, Kim comes to learn and understand herself and those around her more.
My opinion of the book was overwhelmingly positive, but I have three things that were my favorite. The first thing I noticed was the amount of detail used in descriptions of the book's society and landscape. It gave a clear image of scenes and situations taking place in the book. Each of the characters' personalities complements the others and seems to fit into the plot like a puzzle. The second thing I liked about the book was the dialogue. The dialogue felt real because it flowed. The characters’ dialogue matches their personality. It made it feel more natural. The third thing I liked about the book was the steady climactic feeling that kept building from the beginning. It makes you feel overwhelmed by anxiety and desperate to know what comes next.
I do not have any negative opinions about the book. Even the things I found to be confusing did not overpower or take away from the book. The main thing that confused me was the lack of use of the first person. It was unexpected. I had to go back and reread the chapters to make sure I understood what was being said. Ultimately, the plot was very intriguing and captured the reader’s attention easily. It highlights the story of human manipulation and shows how humans use coercion, deception, fear, and force to gain power and enforce their beliefs onto others. It also portrays how trying to erase problems leads to more problems with bigger negative impacts.
The ending was sneaky. I did not expect it to end the way it did. The ending wrapped up everything for me and made the book feels so satisfying. It made me look forward to getting the next book in the series. I could not find any typos, grammar, spelling, or punctuation mistakes in the book. Therefore, I believe this book is exceptionally well-edited, and I give this book a 5 out of 5.
I recommend this book to sci-fi lovers and people looking for an exciting read. Overall, the government's authority over the people in the book felt way too realistic and frightening, but it helped in building the climax. The book was very engaging, and the themes opened avenues for different thoughts and discussion.
