Review of Man Mission
Man Mission by Eytan Uliel describes in detail an annual mission among mates planned sporadically to test new things, visit new places and sometimes soothe their ego. With its fun vacation scenes they bonded over self created rules and rituals which no one had to say or plan anything and just happened over time which provided comfort, context and regularity across a span of 15 years.
The first night shows the terror of Ill planning and overestimation of their ability. In Vietnam, they lodge in a hotel reserved for Communist Party officials. They cross a Japanese mountain range by bicycle. On a remote island, they fall into a “Kava-coma” after drinking Kava root extract with a native chieftain, in Africa, they encounter a lion. The men’s vacations are invested with rituals which are developed along their journeys, from Sumo wrestling to a post-vacation victory lap: a steak dinner. Sanctions are introduced along the way by their wives whom are dubbed "the wife committee", they also share ideas on how to keep their families happy. A commandment of the “Man Mission Charter” a guide in their journey is “He who whines the loudest wears the Pink Bracelet”
I would rate the book 5 out of 5 stars . The writer uses his experience as a traveler and travel author to create a real experience as the narrator to different exotic culture and gruesome physical challenges. It was exceptionally well edited. The best part about the book is how relatable it is, from the ego of male among themselves to how they treat themselves, talk to themselves which when viewed from this book perspective one can see is hilarious. The author introduces in the first chapter an almost perfect way to grab the readers attention I quote “The pick-up truck hurtles down a dirt road in rural New Zealand. In the back it’s just me, four loaded guns, and some kilo of drugs. I’m going to die, I think. And not for the first time today”. The book could almost pass as a memoir with the travels definitely crazy and audacious. And the dialogue among the men is very rich and detailed, filled with both bluster and vulnerability.
There are no major negative points that would be enough to register any reduction in its rating.
The story is lively and well-told, offering interesting characters. I would recommend this book for anyone who reads for enjoyment as it is filled with laughter. Also, I recommend it to those who seek growth and fulfillment in their adulthood and those drawn to the wide variety of challenging adventures may enjoy these risks and dangers.
