Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream for Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is a beautiful memoir about Dr. Berrah. He was an Algerian revolutionary who strived for academic success in his career while partly involved in politics.
When Dr. Berrah opted to further his studies, his stepbrother became an impediment in his educational pursuit, but his mother was fully supportive. Through a scholarship, Dr. Berrah got into a school of his choice in France, where he joined different student union activities. After leading and organizing a series of anti-colonial activities, Berrah became a threat to the French colonists. All these became an avenue for him to leave the country as the police began hunting for him. But after achieving several professional milestones and conducting fieldwork outside of Algeria, Dr. Berrah will board a plane for his continent of Africa.
This book centered on Algeria's struggle for independence. It also an inclusion of the author's research work outside Algeria and his desire for peace and freedom. This is a book that extensively discusses revulsion against racism and colonialism. The book is all-around enriching with great features. For instance, the book is characterized by personalities that strive for the well-being of Algerians irrespective of all the tumors and unfavorable conditions that they endured.
The book commenced on a very alluring note. I loved how the author started by describing some cultural heritage and religion of his people and also other activities they embark in. For instance, we were told of how the students obtained "Certificat d’Études" after the completion of their primary school program. It was quite loving to read. Also, Dr. Berrah didn't fail to tell about his mother's rigorous support and contribution to his educational achievements.
One striking thing about this book is how the author relentlessly pursues his goals and aspirations. Dr. Berrah was an inspiration. He organized programs and events to raise their voice against colonialism; they were also activities of all kinds for the liberation of Algerians, such as the "National Union of Algerian Students" and "General Union of Algerian Muslim Students (UGEMA)."
Dr. Berrah uses his knowledge from his medical profession as an act of service in Taounate and in Missour. This book was very detailed and inclusive. Every part carries a piece of information that will leave you glued to the book. Dr. Berrah didn't leave anything untouched; his challenges and great achievements were all documented.
I found nothing displeasing about this book. I enjoy every part of it. I will love to commend the serial arrangement and structure of each chapter. Every chapter has its concentration which I think was a beautiful addition to the book's quality. Also, I love the fact that the book captured some reality, like the slight information about the assassination of President Kennedy sixteen months after Algeria gained independence.
There were a few errors. But the book seemed professionally edited. The descriptive writing earned this book an excellent rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I will recommend A Dream for Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah to literature lovers and people who have an interest in politics, as they will find this book interesting.
