[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
Matthew Tysz writes an intriguing science fiction and thriller that places the Voulhirian empire at the center of the story’s plot. All his life, Galen had labored in the Land of the Princes to make something of himself. However, the land was suffering because of the conflicts and fights between the King’s sons. Galen gets a letter from his dying uncle asking him to come to Voulhire, the land of magic. His uncle plans to entrust his wealth and forge to Galen. He manages to escape the poverty-stricken Land of the Princes and finally comes to Magnum Caelum. He is surprised at the progress, peace, happiness, and abundance that exist in Voulhire.
Meanwhile, Lord Eldus, a former judge, has just been chosen by the King to rule over Hillport. The selection of Lord Eldus by King Wilhelm was not just to ensure the growth of the rural town but also to put an end to rumors claiming Lord Meldorath to be alive. Could the rumors be true? And would Voulhire remain the land of promises and magic just like Galen deemed it to be? Grab a copy of We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies to find out.
There are so many things I loved about this book. Galen was the protagonist in the book. The author not only wrote the book from Galen’s perspective but also from other characters' perspectives. This was very thoughtful and enabled me to be able to experience every character’s growth and development. It also helped me better appreciate the story and understand the different characters. A character was dedicated to a chapter, giving ample opportunity for character formation and growth. The book was very well organized, and the flow from one chapter to another was also seamless. The author did not just focus on building his character; he also built his story plot well. Though set in medieval times, Matthew added a touch of modernity. I read about the use of steam cars in an age of mages, magic, and sword-fighting. For me, that was one of the most creative things about this book.
I also enjoyed the suspense that surrounded the future of Voulhire. I wondered if the evil plans of the conspirators, who were greedy for power, would come true. I loved the detailed, gory scenes and the chills I felt while reading it. Some readers may not enjoy that and may skip the scenes. I believe it should not be reason enough to miss out on reading a good book. The author was able to get the readers to realize the need for peace and negotiation in resolving problems within a kingdom rather than always opting for war. The book was also exceptionally well edited, as I could not find any grammatical blunders or errors. I had a pleasant reading experience as a result.
I could not find any negative aspects to this book. Gladly, I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars because it was properly edited, filled with suspense, and the story was beautifully told. I recommend this amazing fantasy thriller to anyone who enjoys suspense fiction, fantasy fiction, stories about magic, or stories set in medieval times.
