[Following is a volunteer review of "Reconfigurement" by E. Alan Fleischauer.]
Reconfigurement, written by E. Alan Fleischauer, guides workers through the process of planning for retirement. The book starts by highlighting the need for a retirement plan. It cites the increase in the life span of Americans and the failure of the traditional approaches to retirement as obstacles to planning for retirement. It provides resources for career assessment. Also, it offers advice to readers on how to navigate the labyrinth of life insurance, social security, investment, 401k, IRA and other retirement tools and structures. It exposes the limitations and highlights the strength of these tools and structures. Finally, it finishes with a list of recommended reading.
I like many things about this book. Firstly, I like the fact that E. Alan Fleischauer currently manages millions of dollars for his client. He is , therefore, writing from experience. Secondly, I like the fact that the book is written in a language accessible to all. Thirdly, I like the fact that Reconfigurement does not take the traditional route of planning for retirement. I like that it anticipates questions I had in my mind while reading. How long should I work? Which career am I suited for? How much should I earn and spend? Should my retirement plan influence my choice of job? What should I invest in? Should I insure my life? When should I apply for my social security benefit? What do I stand to lose if I claim early? Should I delay my claim? Can I use any claiming strategy? How can I prepare for any increasing medical costs that might deplete my pension faster than I thought? I like how the author stresses the need for expert's advice because of individual differences. Readers are often advised to take steps that their specific situation demands. Moreover, I like the author's approach to the presentation of steps one needs to take towards retirement. He tries to explain the validity of each step and advice before stating the step and advice itself. Concerning his choice of variable annuities as a favorite, the author cites the introduction of guarantees as the reason for the choice. Other aspects I love about this book are the various tools the author makes accessible to the readers for their career assessment and work value assessment. Also, I love the snippets of history the author gave on Social Security and life protection. Finally, the book is so full of jokes.
I didn't find a negative aspect in this book.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it is a valuable book all employees should have. I did not encounter any errors while reading this book. It was exceptionally well edited.
I recommend this book to all employees planning for retirement.
