[Following is a volunteer review of "Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures" by Catherine A. Pepe.]
Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventure by Catherine A. Pepe is a story about a family which have 2 kids, Mary Grace a 10-year-old smart girl, her 5-year-old down syndrome brother, and unexpected sudden changes go through their lives. Unexpectedly their parents have been assigned a duty to serve as missionaries in Africa for two years. Parents decide to send the children to their grandparents in California until they return. In new school, Mary Grace receives some mystery notes from an unknown person threatening her brother and her friend. Mary Grace is a smart kid and with a brilliant idea, they could find the culprit and they are advised and punished for what they did.
The author has developed the story in a very attractive way with a huge curiosity about what will happen next. In the way it is written, incidents are pictured and I really enjoyed the storytelling. Even an adult can go to their childhood memories through this beautiful narrative style. This story gives a deep insight about how a child desperately search for love and how much they love to be with their parents. Mary Grace acts as a wonderful sister for Donny, been very caring and supportive to his brother with special needs. She always wanted to see Donny happy, whatever bad the situation is.
I enjoyed reading this book for many reasons. I love the way whole family take care of Donny. They all know what he loves and encourage him to do things he loves. Mary Grace is a very responsible kid for her age and she takes full responsibility about Donny in their journey to California. And I love the way she always takes good caring about her brother in new school. Mary Grace handles the incident of bulling in school carefully and it implies how intelligent she is. Also, she is a very kind hearted girl, even the Justin and Tiffany did pretty bad things to her and her brother she still wanted to make their lives better and take them to the right path by doing something they are capable.
I didn’t find anything to dislike this book and I rate this book 5 out of 5.
In my perspective this book is a great read for all ages and I recommend this book for anyone that love to read adventurous mystery books
