Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe is an engrossing and entertaining book about the exciting adventures of Mary Grace and her little brother Donny in California.

It starts with the Miller family going out for an outing at the Sedgwick County Zoo. The family loved going there together to spend quality family time. They were a happy family that loved and supported each other. Mary Grace was 10 years old, while her brother Donny was 5 years old and was diagnosed with Down syndrome. Their father was a priest and rector of St. James Episcopal Church, and their mother was a civil engineer. They were posted to Kenya, in Africa, for 2 years. Mary Grace and her brother, Donny, had to relocate to California to stay with their grandparents. Mary Grace was initially disappointed with having to move away from Wichita, but little did she know of the exciting adventures she would have in California with the Grandma Gang, who loved solving mysteries.

A children’s book of seventeen chapters, Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures was easy and simple to read. I loved the language the author used. I found it so easy to understand. Not only that, but I also admired how loving the family was and how they understood each other, most especially how Mary Grace loved and cared for her little brother Donny and how they all treated him with love despite his having Down syndrome. Likewise, I enjoyed the plot and the characters in the book, most especially Mary Grace. The thing about Mary Grace was that she was smart and loving despite being young, acted maturely, and knew how to solve most of her problems.

The book was highly educative; it has life lessons to be taught to children based on morals, ethics, and how to handle life situations. I loved how the author laid emphasis on the value of family, friendship, and love and how to treat others right. I admired how the author addressed bullying and its negative effect on children.

The book was exceptionally well written. It was exceptionally well edited, as there were no grammatical or spelling errors. I couldn’t find any negative aspects in the book. I would rate the book 5 out of 5 stars. It was written to perfection.

I would highly recommend the book to young readers, ages 8 and above, who enjoy reading books about mysteries and adventures.

I have read this book and I adore the author for writing such a wonderful book. If Mary Grace hadn't accepted to visit California while their parents were away, I doubt they would have experienced such wonderful adventures and mystery. This is a perfect read for children and there are many moral lessons to learn from this book too. Thanks for the review.
