As a diehard book lover, words written on paper will always come first when it comes to reading a book, and to be honest I never thought I would “listen” a book instead of reading it, because it never sounded appealing to me. But now that I was given the opportunity to try Audible by Amazon my mind has changed. Don’t get me wrong, books will always be my favorite over any digital format, but the thing with Audible is that I can enjoy a good book anywhere and anytime, literally.
You see, I’m a dentistry student and I live in Chile, here we don’t have universities where we can move in there while we are studying, so every day we have to travel from our home to university, sometimes even several times a day. So in my case I use the train that connects the city where I live to the city where my campus is, it’s a 50 minutes trip more or less and most of the time the train is full and I can’t sit in the whole time, so pulling out a book and try to hang onto something to prevent a public humiliation like falling on top of someone I simply can’t do that. But when I started using this app I was so happy because now I can do it, I can use that time to catch up on my most beloved novels and still use my hands to carry my textbooks and other things.
Speaking of textbooks, Audible has anything you can imagine, from novels to medicine or engineering texts, which is an important and very useful thing. No matter where you are, you can always grab a pair of earphones and start studying or taking notes. You can carry your textbooks with you wherever you go without the extra weight, since that kind of books are always heavy and uncomfortable to carry around.
For another thing Audible is perfect for is traveling. I love looking out of the window on those long rides and these Audible audiobooks are ideal for that because I can enjoy the surroundings and still pay attention to a book, that way I don’t skip a single detail of anything.
Now for the audiobooks, I chose two completely different books from a huge diversity of titles this program offers so that way I could see how versatile Audible is, one of them was “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” by Jenny Han and the other was “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr. Both books are placed in completely different scenarios, so when I first read them I was surprised at how accurate the voices and effects were, it was like someone was telling me a story, and what I liked the most about the narrators is the way they give life to the characters, it’s not a flat read, they add emotion, they change their voice tones, it’s very entertaining.
I really like the Android app, it’s easy to use, I read two books and there was no problem in keeping track of where I was the last time I “read” them. The books are divided in chapters and each one works like a different audio track, so you can always go back and re-read a passage from a chapter without a problem. What I really loved about all of this is the Whispersync option. This is a feature where you can connect your Kindle books to Audible, if they are compatible for this, and you can switch from reading to listening to a book whenever you need to.
For all the reasons I listed above is why I give 4 out of 4 stars to Audible. It’s a different and fun way to enjoy books of any kind whenever you want, if you are cooking, working, walking or even when you go for a run, you can always have your favorite book in the audiobook format in your cell phone or in another device so you can listen to it while doing other things, perfect for people who like to multitask.
