We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies, the first book in the We Are Voulhire series, by Matthew Tysz is a fictional fantasy book set in a world where magic and might reign supreme.

Galen Bray, an escapee from the barbaric Islands of Princes, comes seeking refuge in Voulhire, a peaceful and thriving kingdom. With just the inheritance letter sent from his long-lost granduncle in his hands, he hopes to start his life afresh, but things are not as they seem in Voulhire. A storm is brewing in Voulhire, and the forces that threaten its very existence, both within and external, will test it to its core. A rebel group with deep roots in Voulhire recent resurgence, the former general of the kingdom's army with unparalleled power running amok, and the unstable political climate all threaten to make Galen's hope for a brighter future transient.

This novel is narrated from both the first-person and third-person perspectives. From reading this book, it is clear to see that efforts are made by the author to meticulously develop the characters in it. For instance, Galen Bray, the protagonist, because of the hardship he experienced in the Islands of Princes, the value that he attaches to his newfound freedom is naive yet relatable. Along this book's progression, considering the constant change in the perspective that the book is being narrated from, it is laudable that the development of each of the characters is not mixed up with one another.

As an avid reader of fictional books that infuse magic, I can say that the way magic is used in this book is very creative. Rather than a spontaneous paranormal element as seen in most books, the author took his time to detail its origin and mechanics in a way that is more than reasonable in this book's context. I liked that the author didn't neglect such details, as insignificant as they may seem.

Due to the extensiveness of the book's plot, the map, which helped me visualized the world better, and the guide, which gave an overview of the book's plot, at the beginning of this book proved helpful while reading this book.

Even though this book's main plot didn't unfold as quickly as I would like, it can be attributed to this book being the first of its series; therefore, I won't deduct any stars for this. Apart from this, I found nothing else that I disliked. This book is exceptionally well edited, as I found no spelling or grammatical errors. For this book's intriguing plot, excellent characters, and other aforementioned reasons, I am rating it 5 out of 5 stars.

I would recommend this book to fans of the fantasy fiction genre, as Matthew Tysz delivers an exquisitely developed fantastical world paired with an intriguing plot. Gory and violent scenes are in this book, so I would recommend it to an adult audience.

The Islands of Princes seem like an awful place to live. Hope that Galen gets the peace he seeks in Voulhire.

It's only a shame that this book unfolded rather slowly. But I am sure the others in its series won't go like that. Good review.

What are the secretive forces that are seeking for the destruction of Voulhire? I suppose I won't know until I read this book.
